Happy 4th of July

I hope everyone is having a Happy 4th of July! We spent this morning finishing the dog fence. Now it is finally all done and the dogs have a big portion of the backyard to enjoy. It is good to have a job completed. Afterwards, we decided to drive to the town of Litchfield, as they were having a 4th of July festival. Woodbury only has fireworks (and we won't be going as we'll be home with the dogs), so we thought this was a chance to see a new town in the area. Litchfield is about 30 minutes from here and it's the county seat of the county we live in, which is Litchfield County. (Here's a map of the county for anyone interested in the geography.) The town of Litchfield has a lovely and large town green, big beautiful homes in the town center, and a cute little downtown. The 4th of July festival was teeny tiny and consisted mainly of a pet parade and games for kids, but it was still fun and festive and well-attended. Half of the fun was the driving to and from. Here are some photos from our day.
No party is complete without a burlap sack race! This was one of the games at the Litchfield 4th of July "Turn of the Century" festival on the town green.
This church stands along the town green in Litchfield.
On our way home, we passed a sign for a pick-your-own orchard in the town of Bethlehem. The fruit in season was blueberries, so that's what we picked. The bushes were quite pretty, and seeing them was all we needed in order to decide that we will definitely plant some blueberries at home.
The blueberries look good enough to eat -- and I can say from personal experience that they are!
On our way home we drove through Bethlehem, which is Woodbury's neighboring town. I thought their painted and weathered post office sign was charming and so I couldn't resist a photo. And now that we're home . . . we have fresh fish that I bought off a fish truck on Thursday in town, plus vegetables that we bought from a farm stand on our drive today. And possibly some blueberries for dessert! It's not quite your typical 4th of July barbeque, but it'll do!
