Annivbirthday

We spent the birthday/anniversary day rafting 10 miles down the Housatonic River, just north and south of the covered bridge at Cornwall. This area is about 40 miles north of where we live. There were some rapids, but it was fairly easy for us first-timers, even with the current running fast today after so much rain. The sky was overcast and it was only in the 70's, which means it was perfect for being out on the water. Mary was in charge of steering and did a great job.
You can see we are approaching the covered bridge in this picture. One of the things we enjoyed today was watching the herons and eagles. There were too many of each to count. We're not sure what species of eagle we saw, but they weren't bald eagles, as they were brown all over in color. We couldn't believe how many there were. The herons were elegant as they flew back and forth across the river.
A man and his dog. When we got home, Brad took down a big branch that fell on our fence during a storm yesterday. Allie helped him.
We had a late birthday dinner. It poured down rain shortly after we got home, so we waited it out and then John barbequed a delicious flank steak. Mary had a tough time blowing out her candles. You can see how hard John is laughing.
Our birthday girl.

  1. Tell Mary that I did remember to call her but then my mother-in-law came over for dinner and things got hectic and I forgot! So sorry. I will try to see if I can remember to call her tomorrow.

Your rafting trip must have been tame if you had on life vests made for swimming in a pool!! It is neat how much wildlife you can see on a river.
