On His Way

Peter flew to London last night to start his month of backpacking through Europe before he goes to Poland next month. We all took him to the airport and gave him a sendoff I am sure he's trying hard to forget. We had a lot of fun, and I think he did too!

The car was packed and it was time to pull out of the driveway. Naturally, this was the perfect time to pull out my tripod and have everyone pose for a family photo on the tailgate of the van. Brad and the kids are such good sports. I am so good at being annoying.
Here is patient Peter, posing at the airport with the backpack that Brad picked out for him. This carries almost everything he is taking on the trip and after being packed it weighs in at just over 30 pounds (he also has his school backpack, which contains mostly just his computer, and which he will carry on his front when he has to be carrying both at the same time). This big backpack is designed to carry a lot of weight so there are strong and very supportive straps, but still, 30-plus pounds is a lot of weight on one's back. Oh wait, that was the mother talking. The son hardly notices the weight.
While waiting in line for Peter to check in, we had fun taking more pictures of him. Here, John is giving him lots of valuable brotherly advice on dos and donts for his trip. I am sure he was very appreciative of this close family bonding time. (But I am still wondering why John asked, for when he flies overseas next year for his semester abroad, to have just Peter take him to the airport.)
Even Peter's student visa was photoworthy.
Finally, he's through the ticket line and about to go through security (also known as: be rid of us). He didn't know it at the time, but his flight was going to be 90 minutes late in leaving as JFK had a huge evacuation in his terminal that afternoon. It was almost all cleared up by the time we arrived, but the flights were backed up as a result. And finally, Peter has started a blog about his trip. Here is the website in case you want to take a look.
