Baby Steps

Our garden is coming together.  We finally have all 13 raised beds filled with soil.  We have planted a few things, with more to come now that all the beds are ready.  There's not much to show at this point, but here's some of what we have so far . . . .
This came as a total surprise - our peach tree is filled with little peaches!  We didn't expect to have any fruit this year, but if they can hang on it looks like we will!
If we were to make a movie about our garden, the title could be "There Will Be Strawberries."  This is because I miscalculated how many we'd need and I ordered twice what we have room for.  (Oops.)  So last weekend we planted two four-by-four beds with half of the strawberry plants.  Now I'm clearing space elsewhere in the yard for the other half.  I'm not sure if we'll have any fruit this year, but once they start producing I think we should have plenty . . . . .
These little spinaches made me smile when I went out to the garden today.  They were just planted on Sunday, and they've already sprouted!
These pictures are for in case you were wondering why the crazy Harrisons made 13 raised beds when we have plenty of land to plant on.  First, take a look at the above and below pictures.  See all the rocks?  Okay, hold those images in your mind.

Remember the rocks?  Now you see this little blueberry bush?  (Well, right now I'd call it a stick, but eventually it will look like a bush.)  We planted four of these blueberries.  And from the four holes we dug came all of the rocks in the two photos above.  It may not seem like a lot, but the blueberries didn't take very big holes and some of those rocks are whoppers (believe me).  What I'm trying to say is that the soil here is really rocky.  And THAT is one of the reasons we opted for the raised beds.
Allie is a good gardening buddy.  She makes us laugh by bringing her tennis ball over to wherever we are and dropping it in the middle of whatever we're doing.
