Back to School, the 2010 Edition

Yesterday I got to spend the day in Boston with John to help him move into his new place.  At Tufts, students are only guaranteed on-campus housing for three years, so most juniors live off-campus.  John's house is in a great location, between the campus and Davis Square (college town).  Class starts the day after Labor Day, so John will get a few more days to settle in and get ready for school after spending the last week volunteering with a pre-orientation program called Tufts FOCUS.
John at his new house.  The temperatures in Boston were in the high 90's for move-in day yesterday, but we still got lots done and had a fun day together.
John's godparents gave him this stuffed dog they named Medford (after the town where Tufts is located) for high school graduation.  Tufts is in Medford, Massachusetts, but it sits right next to Somerville, Massachusetts.  Now having moved off-campus, John doesn't live in Medford anymore; his new address is in Somerville.  (But seeing as Medford usually lives inside a desk drawer, he probably won't notice the difference.)
Back at home  . . . . in the first of many lasts for this school year, today was the first day of school for Mary and our last first-day-of-school here at home.  Eighteen years ago, when Mary was a brand new baby, we had our first first-day-of-school when Peter started Junior Kindergarten at Prairie School.  All these years later, Mary is a senior in high school, Peter is a senior in college (and just had an article published in the online edition of a magazine at his school; here's the link), and John, as I already mentioned, is a junior in college.  I think all this nostalgia calls for a look back at one of those early first-days-of-school in this week's Friday Flashback . . . .
