I have always loved this picture, which I think I lifted from the school website. This was in the fall of 2002, when John was in 7th grade. In the picture are John (in the middle), Mrs. Dunmire (middle school principal at the American School of Warsaw), and John's friend Alex. As you can see from the caption, they were in Moscow for a cross-country meet. I'm not sure what seems stranger: the fact that John was in Moscow for a cross-country meet, or the fact that John was in a cross-country meet at all. But here they are, posing for a silly photo while sightseeing around Red Square. The hats they're wearing, which unfortunately you can't see very well in the photo, are hats that John bought at a Russian flea market. The one he has on is absolutely covered with Russian war medals - whether authentic or not, who knows, but probably not. We still have them and they've been very useful over the years when someone needs a good addition to a costume.
