Warm Weekend

The weekend started for me on Friday. I went to New York for the day to see my friend Priscilla, from Shorewood, who was in town visiting her son. We went to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum for the second time, and again had an interesting visit. We also did some shopping, meandering and, of course, eating.

We had a delicious and delightful dinner with Priscilla's son Casey (a classmate of Mary's from Shorewood), who is now a freshman at Columbia.

While you can maybe see from the photos that we were chilly in New York, back in Connecticut the temperatures were up by Saturday and we decided it was time to get the gardening started! The first job was to get the hoses set up.

While I was setting up the hoses, Allie was happy to come outside and hang out with me. And as you might imagine, she was mostly interested in playing. You can see the frisbee at the bottom of the picture, which she is asking me to throw for her.

After I got the hoses set up yesterday, I cleaned out the beds and added some soil to the beds. I noticed that the strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, and many of the herbs are looking good, and some are already making their yearly comebacks. Today I planted lettuce, arugula, spinach, cabbage, and peas. I plan to plant a bit more this coming week.
And through it all, Allie still wanted to play. I was working on this bed and she tossed her toy onto it. She knows how to get my attention.

Even with his gimpy hand, Brad managed to set up most of the lawn furniture. By the end of Sunday we had gotten a fair amount of work done for the first weekend of spring, which I still find hard to believe was in the middle of March. We'll be gone for the next few weekends, so we're glad that Mother Nature gave us a chance to get a head start this weekend!
