Road to Hana

On Wednesday afternoon, Brad and I circumnavigated the southern half of Maui. (The shape of Maui is like a figure 8.) The drive is sometimes referred to as "the road to Hana" since the halfway point is this sleepy and extremely remote town called Hana. The drive took us first through rainforest and then through high desert. We were along the coast the entire way. Toward the end the road was dirt and rugged. Thankfully, our little Mazda made it through. Here are some highlights.

This was a fairly typical view when the drive through the rainforest opened up for an ocean view.

So of course we asked someone to take our picture.

A stairway up to a lookout point in the rainforest.

Sorry for another one of me and Brad, but this was the only photo of this waterfall that didn't need to be rotated. (And there's no way to rotate a photo on an iPad, I've just learned.) There were so many waterfalls that we lost count. This one was by far the tallest.

On the other side of the island from the rainforest it was more like a high desert. Still, the views were gorgeous. We watched whales out in the water.

My trusty driver.

A totally different look from the rainforest.

While we drove along the ocean in the more arid area, off to our right inside those clouds was the volcano Haleakala.
