Everybody Under Our Roof

The kids have been visiting and this weekend their stays converged for two entire days. This is cause for celebration, and celebrate we did. On Saturday evening we had dinner on the deck (thanks to John for grilling the burgers) and a family "beer" tasting.

John was our leader of the evening of many beers. We learned as much as we tasted. It was lots of fun.

I know what you're thinking, but don't expect any endorsement of underage drinking on this blog. Yes, Mary had "beer"..... we got the girl who loves root beer some locally made root beer when we were in Ithaca last month.

I've decided that beer photographs really well. John and Troy introduced us to this one in Boston recently. It's one of my favorites. This brewery is in Portland, Maine.

For dessert, the boys enjoyed Porter ice-cream floats, and Mary had a root beer float. This Porter comes from a brewery in Hawaii called Kona (and, as the boys informed us, it was undoubtedly not brewed in Hawaii, but that's where the brewery is headquartered). Since we drank Kona beer when we were in Maui it's kind of sentimental.

Porter is one of Peter's favorites, so we tried a few. This brewery is in Escondido, California.

Sunday morning started with a family tradition: Mrs. Coin's French Toast. Yum!

Having learned so much about beer on Saturday, by Sunday it was time for John to school Brad in the art of home brewing. (Or as I saw it, we could finally get the boxes of home brew supplies off the dining room table.)

The student at work.

One big bucket of beer later, the brewers shook hands before lugging the bucket down to the basement for its week of fermentation.

By Sunday afternoon it was already time to take John to the train station in New Haven so he could get to work on Monday morning. But first we stopped for dinner at a favorite falafel restaurant. The weekend went by quickly, but it was great to be together. Peter and Mary are still here; Peter flies back to DC on Wednesday and Mary returns to Stanford on Friday.
