Flashback Friday

She's always been fearless. Here's Mary in October of 2003, at age 11, in the Ishikawa prefecture of Japan. She was the only sixth grader on this high school music cultural exchange trip—after having taken up the oboe only a few months prior. (And just a year earlier she was a fourth grader in her Polish school—another thing she was fearless about was being made to skip a grade when we moved to Japan.) Brad and I chaperoned the boys' musical group on this trip, which is why Mary was along too. She could have just hung out with us, but when the principal suggested she join the trip as a full member of the ensemble, she gamely agreed. Over the years she has never ceased to amaze us with her willingness to put herself out there. She no longer plays the oboe (and she doesn't wear a plaid jumper anymore either) but in pretty much all other respects she's as fearless as always, and for this we couldn't be more proud of her.
