We had a nice but quiet Fourth of July. John and Troy hosted friends at their house, and we also had friends over. We walked over to the annual Webster Groves 4th of July parade which had a lot of nice entries including, as always, the Battle of the Bulge veterans, above. They seem to be the most popular people at the entire parade, which is about 90 minutes in length.
We had a nice lunch after the parade, which included some of what's in season (above, mango salsa), as well as burgers on the grill and corn-on-the-cob.
And, of course, fruit! But you're probably wondering about the travelers. Let's see what they're up to.
Peter and Jessa left Gettysburg (Jessa's hometown) on Saturday morning, along with their friend Ana. The three of them made it all the way to Chicago that night. Along the way they had lunch with two friends in Toledo, and they brought one of those friends to Chicago. (If you're thinking this sounds like the road trip version of musical chairs, I feel the same way!) Above they are with their friend Brian, whom they visited in Chicago.
This is their crew in Chicago: John (the Toledo addition who's traveling with them all the way to Portland), Brian, Peter, Jessa, and Ana (who flew back east this morning). This morning Peter, Jessa, and John left Chicago and continued the trek west, driving through Wisconsin on their way to tonight's overnight stop at a sunflower farm in Minnesota. It sounds like their trip is off to a good start!
Meanwhile, Mary's been busy too. As I mentioned in a post a few days ago, she left here on Tuesday night and spent the rest of the week moving. (She's all moved!) Then on Saturday she went to the wedding of a fellow teacher (above).
By Sunday her new room saw even more improvement and she told us that sleeping in a room which is noticeably larger than the size of her bed definitely agrees with her!
Today I sent a few of you her new address and when I looked up her zip code, Google was nice enough to provide me with a photo of her new house. Hers is the one on the right. She seems very happy with her new neighborhood.
And then yesterday she got on the plane and made the trip to Ecuador for her weeklong vacation. She texted this picture this morning, which was the view from her hostel in Quito while she was sipping her morning coffee.
And you're in luck! Just as I was wrapping up this post, in chimed a couple of pictures from Mary! She, Brad and I went back and forth in texts and it sounds like she had a great first day in Quito. According to her handy dandy iPhone, she walked over 36,000 steps (over 16 miles), including 82 flights of stairs! Someone's gonna sleep well tonight!
It looks like her trip's off to a good start too!
