Flashback Friday

As kids' tables go, this is a pretty good one. In the summer of 2002, made a trip to Germany and visited our distant relatives in Mörtelstein. My great-grandfather was born and raised in this town and his half-brother's son Heinz, and later Heinz's daughter Bettina, raised their families in the home where my great-grandfather grew up. Although Bettina's children are now grown, she and her husband Gerd still live there. Heinz and his late wife Maria had moved down the street, and this was their beautiful bucolic backyard. They had a lovely garden and Heinz kept bees. Everything about it and all of them was heavenly. Seated with our kids is Heinz's granddaughter Theresa. Theresa's sister Julia was the only one in the family who spoke fluent English and she has been the connection between our families for many years. We had the most wonderful day with Heinz and Maria, their daughters, and their daughters' families.
