In my never-ending quest to assemble a winning team of grocery stores to shop at no matter where we live . . . . . today I found a new store that I really like. (Yeah!) They had a decent Japanese food selection, including the above mayonnaise. It caught my eye because, well, who thinks of buying Japanese mayonnaise? Plus, when we lived in Japan, this was the same brand of mayonnaise that I used to buy. It was good, but as far as I could tell, there was nothing particularly special about it. (My palate is evidently underdeveloped; read on.) So I wondered . . . . . of all the Japanese products to stock, why choose mayonnaise? Could it be the cute kewpie guy on the bottle? It seemed this would remain a mystery. Then, just as I was typing in this post that "this is one of those rare questions that can't be Googled" I decided to Google it just in case. And it turns out Amazon.com sells this mayonnaise, which is
actually called Kewpie Mayonnaise. And Amazon says it's the "undisputed king of mayonnaise;" it's also yellower, richer, and creamier than American or European mayonnaise (thus my underdeveloped palate), and it's been made in Japan since 1925. Who knew? (Clearly I did not.) Armed with this new knowledge, I now feel rather ignorant as a result of something rather insignificant.
