Conclusion of the Movie Marathon

Here we are at our last movie, Gran Torino.

We went out to dinner after Gran Torino.
For kids with gourmet tastes like ours, there's nowhere else like Applebee's!

And so the annual Movie Marathon is over! This year we saw Milk, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, and Gran Torino. Here's the rundown and the dates we saw each movie. 12/26: We saw Slumdog Millionaire this afternoon. Everyone liked it -- a lot. I don't want to give anything away, but if you want to learn more here's a review that echoes some of the discussion we had in the car on the way home. 12/27: Tonight we saw Milk. Wow. Very powerful, very well done. A good history lesson for the kids too. Five thumbs up for the second night in a row -- we're on a roll! 1/1: We are still waiting to see our last two movies, but in the meantime Peter and Brad saw The Spirit tonight. They thought the effects were pretty cool (Samuel L too) but that was about all. Mary went with them and saw Yes Man in a different theatre with a friend. She liked it and said she'd give it a 3 out of 5. 1/2: Tonight we saw Frost/Nixon. This movie was another five thumbs up. The actor who played Richard Nixon was excellent. It made a series of interviews feel like they had the intensity of a boxing match. It was another good history lesson for the kids and the movie made for lively discussion afterwards. 1/6: Brad was alone is St. Louis this week, so he went to see The Reader. He liked it, and said that Ralph Fiennes was particularly good. I read the book years ago. I thought it was quite good but also thought it would make for a pretty heavy movie. 1/9: We saw Gran Torino and it was another winner. There were some really good Clint Eastwood moments and all in all a very good movie. And so in conclusion, we decided that all four of the movies we saw as a family this year were really good. We took a vote as to our number one favorite among the four. Milk took two votes (Sue and Peter), Slumdog Millionaire took two votes (Brad and Mary), and Gran Torino took one vote (John). And so there we have it, another year of the Movie Marathon, and a good one it was!

  1. We are going to see Slum Dog this weekend. I want to see Frost/Nixon, but I don't think Don wants to see it. I just started reading The Reader so I'll let you know what I think about that. I bought it because I knew the movie was supposed to be good. We will get out to see Gran Torino as well but not sure we'll make it to 2 movies this weekend when Don's sister is here from Alaska and my Maxima sits in the garage in need of Don's help!!
