I'm still new enough here that I continue to be fascinated by the wildlife. I took this picture on my way out of the driveway to pick up Mary. The huge bird caught my eye as I was about to turn onto the street. From a distance it looked like it was pulling a big rubberband out of the ground, but I later figured out that what looked like elastic was the carcass of a long-dead squirrel.

My brother (a hunter, so he knows a lot more about this than I do) tells me the bird is a Turkey Vulture.

When I returned home about a half an hour later, the bird was back. I tried to take a closer picture from the road, but it flew away. You can see it on the left side of the photo. Its wingspan is pretty impressive.
