The Owl's Dinner

Today we returned to painting. This time we're painting one of the guest rooms. In this winter's construction project it got a new wall (the back half of our closet), so we're forced to paint it. We finally decided we've put it off as long as we could, so we (translated: mostly Brad, a bit me) got started last weekend with priming and this weekend it was time for color. This morning we started painting - and we hated the color. That color on the right is what we bought last weekend - way too pink. So we went back to the store and got the color on the left - the light mocha we were looking for. I hate to waste paint, but we're so much happier with the new color.

And now about the owl's dinner. After I finished painting I took Allie outside to play. We have a huge walnut tree in the middle of our backyard, and there was a juvenile squirrel midway up the tree making all sorts of squeaking noises. It was kind of driving Allie crazy, but the squirrel was so high up that she knew he was out of reach. Anyway, after a bit I noticed an owl fly into the tree next to the walnut. Brad's been hearing this owl but we'd never seen it. This is him above. He was big and majestic and quite beautiful. I was admiring him and I took this photo. Seconds later he started flying through the walnut tree and he landed on a perch. I noticed the local birds were making lots of racket. Then all of a sudden the owl started flying again, away from the tree, then he made a u-turn right in front of me and I noticed he had something in his talons. Of course, you know by now it was the little squirrel. Poor thing, even though his relatives in Connecticut stole our peaches, and his relatives in St. Louis stole our tomatoes, I still felt kind of sorry for him. He is most definitely what the owl had for dinner tonight.

  1. It's strange to see an owl during the day. You need a zoom lens like mine!
