Farewell Our Friends

Today we said farewell to some dear friends. Mary met Meryl at her first volleyball practice in the days before starting school here, and they have been good friends ever since. Meryl graduated on Saturday, she turned 18 today, and after living in Connecticut for four years, this morning she and her mom, Dawn, drove off to return to their home state of Wyoming before Meryl starts college in Colorado in the fall. Mary (who got home late last night and will be here for 10 days) and I were privileged to have breakfast with them before they left town. This is Mary and Meryl doing their signature "W" pose that they invented during their first volleyball season together. ("W" stands for their home states of Wisconsin and Wyoming.)

Dawn is a wonderful friend, and she's a health and fitness buddy extraordinaire. Since January we've been supporting each other at the gym and at Weight Watchers, and never was there a more supportive or reliable person in this role. On many a dark winter night I would gladly have skipped our 5:30 p.m. rendezvous to go to the gym, but Dawn was always there, often with a piece of fruit in hand and always with determination in her eyes, even though she'd only gotten off work a few minutes earlier and was undoubtedly tired. I will miss her terribly, but am so glad for the gift of our friendship. We all wish Dawn and Meryl the very best in their new adventures out West.

  1. So is Meryl going to CU? Let us know and maybe we could introduce Brian to her. Brian goes next week for orientation for 2 days.
