Next week on Thursday, this one-time second grade boy turns 31. I could say something like, how is that possible, which of course is the kind of thought that's coursing through my mind. Rationally I know it must be possible, since obviously he was born that many years ago. But it still feels surreal, as it does every year on his birthday (and on John's and Mary's birthdays too). All I know is that since the day he was born Peter has been one of my favorite people in the whole world (yes, even during the adolescent years) and since his fashion sense today isn't far from his fashion sense in the second grade (his current wardrobe includes shirts strikingly similar to the one he wore in this second grade picture), his consistent fashion sense helps me to feel like he's not that much older, just a bit taller and a lot wiser.
