November 9, 2003, at Miyajima Island in Japan. We took the Shinkansen (bullet train) for a weekend trip with a Japanese guide and small tour group, visiting Himedji, Hiroshima, and Miyajima. It was a great trip and educational on so many levels. Can you see John's timidity in petting this wild but extremely tame deer? He's barely touching the deer, and his back right foot looks like he's ready to take off at a moment's notice.
