We have been harvesting all sorts of fruits and vegetables, but strawberries and zucchini are in abundance. The strawberries came back for a second round and they are going crazy - we are getting many more than we expected after such a great harvest in June. So we eat them every day, and with the local peaches and blueberries in season, it's been delicious. We've also been eating a lot of zucchini and I have been freezing what we don't eat. If you have a lot of zucchini too, I contributed my favorite zucchini recipe on a gardening blog I like.
Today I harvested carrots. This year was definitely our best year for carrots. The greens are so healthy and huge. I just planted a few more, hoping maybe we can have some at the end of the season. Tonight I'm going to make carrott-tarragon soup with a recipe I found online. The tarragon in the garden is doing great. It's our first year to grow it and I'm so happy we planted it. Today I also harvested the garlic. It is strung up and drying in the garage. Considering the difficult life it led, I'm happy with the dozen heads I was able to harvest. Today I also planted some more lettuce, as well as more snap peas, beans, and some herbs.
And speaking of food . . . . look, it's Mary on Man vs. Food Nation (Milwaukee edition) on the Travel Channel last night! She was in Benji's Deli in Shorewood in June when the crew arrived to do a taping. That's her friend Mary Traudt giving host Adam Richman a fist bump. In the background in the orange sweater is our Mary. She's sitting with a bunch of her friends. The episode is being replayed on August 6 at 11:00 a.m. and on August 10 at 9:30 p.m. These times are Eastern/Pacific, so if you're in the Central time zone I believe you would subtract one hour. It's on the Travel Channel. The Shorewood kids' appearances are fast, so don't blink! (Update: after I posted this, I found that one of Mary's friends had taped the Benji's portion of the episode and put it on Facebook. So I reposted it,; if you go to my Wall you can find the video. Brad and Mary did the same thing.)
