Yesterday we headed down to Citi Field in Queens to cheer on the Milwaukee Brewers when they played the New York Mets. Our first stop was Penn Station to pick up Peter from the train. Then we headed over to the new Mets stadium, which is beautiful. It was a great afternoon of baseball.
Before the game we got to go on the field to watch batting practice. Now, when Brad said we were going to go "on the field" I thought he meant on the field. Silly me. What this actually means was that we got to stand behind home plate during batting practice. It was very cool. As you can see, Mary and I supported our favorite Brewer, Craig Counsell. We were hoping to get to see some of the Brewers up close during batting practice, but since the previous night's game went late due to a rain delay, the Brewers didn't take any batting practice. Bummer. But it was still interesting to watch the Mets warm up. Being so close to the field, everything looks much smaller.
We met lots of nice Mets fans in the seats around us, and one of them kindly took this picture of the four of us. Although John wasn't there, he was watching the game on TV in Boston, and he and Peter were texting back and forth during the game. So in a way, he was there.
It was a novelty to sit close enough to take pictures of the game. This is Ryan Braun rounding third base after hitting the first Brewers home run of the game. (There were two others, including a whopper by Prince Fielder.) After the Brewers had the lead for most of the game, the Mets came from behind late in the game to take the lead, but in the ninth the Brewers came back to win it. So it was both an exciting and stressful game for fans of both teams, and the final score was 11-9.
After the game, Peter drove home with us. We had birthday cake for Mary and then we all got up bright and early to take Peter to catch his train back to DC.
