Yesterday I picked the remaining carrots out of the garden. Most were too small to eat, but I took them out rather than leave anything to encourage the deer. These two made it into my soup. This marks the end of the harvest for the year.
A few weeks ago we planted garlic, which will over-winter for a harvest next summer. As you can see, it's already popping up - a sign of spring in October! I am already dreaming of the Garlic Scape Pesto that all these plants will offer us!
We have untold amounts of leaves in our yard. Every year we have our lawn guy blow them into the wetlands behind our house. This year we decided that's a waste of some good compost. So yesterday Brad built this leaf composter using some old deer fencing and posts. As you can see there's an opening in the front of it. We are filling it with both whole (i.e., raked) and mulched (i.e., mowed) leaves as fast as we can.
By the end of the day yesterday we had to close the door as the composter was getting too full to keep the door open. We'll continue to fill it with more leaves in the coming weeks. With some luck Mother Nature will work her magic over the winter and we'll have some nice compost in the spring.

The compost was a good idea.
