La Fiesta de San Isido en Madrid

Today's our last day in Madrid! (Sad face.) It's May 15 and now we know that means ..... it's the Feast of San Isidro, the patron saint of Madrid. Which means ..... it's a local holiday. Which means ..... that today everyone was out and about in Madrid - including us! We had a long and leisurely lunch at a restaurant with Mary's host mom, Pilar. Afterwards we all went out for coffee and dessert. It was a lovely afternoon! This is Mary, Brad, and Pilar during our afternoon.

Later in the afternoon we met Mary's friend Kyle for a museum trip that wasn't meant to be. We first went to the Reina Sofia, only to find out that due to the holiday it was closed all day. Then we went to the Thyssen, only to find out that we had poor timing, as we arrived just before closing. So no museums for us today.

Instead we took an elevator to the rooftop of a building near the neighborhood where Mary lives. The views were fantastic!

Then we went to a cafe in that same neighborhood and enjoyed a glass of wine and chatted. This going out for drink early in the evening before a late dinner is a part of our Spanish experience that we will miss when we return home!

We wandered to a nearby restaurant for one last late and leisurely dinner. The Spanish schedule of a late and light breakfast, a late and heavy lunch, and a late and not-necessarily-so-light dinner is vastly different than ours - and not sustainable for anyone like me who needs a lot of sleep - but if you're on vacation and have lots of time, it is addicting! What's more addicting is just enjoying a different pace, being in a different place, and of course spending lots of quality time with one of our kids. Tomorrow we will say goodbye to Madrid and to Mary, but we will also say a big thank you for such a fantastic visit!
