Farewell Old Friend

Why am saying goodbye to a rice cooker?  I guess because it was a regular reminder of our time in Japan.  We were given this used rice cooker when we moved to Japan almost eight years ago.  The story is that it was owned by an SC Johnson expat family, and when they left Japan they handed it down to an incoming Johnson expat family.  The second family left Japan just as we were moving in, and they passed the rice cooker to us.  We had planned to do the same when we left, but by that time there were no new expat families coming in, so we just brought the rice cooker to Shorewood.  I would estimate it's close to 15 years old and until lately it's been quite reliable.  I never took the effort to translate the Japanese controls on the front; all I would do is fill it with rice and water, push the red button, and we'd have rice in about half an hour.  Those days are now behind us, as we've had too many nights of dinner getting delayed because the rice cooker didn't work (again) and when I burned some rice in a favorite pan (now scorched) after the last such episode, I decided it was time to make a change.  And so a new rice cooker is on its way to our house, and it's time to say farewell to our hardworking - but now no longer working - Japanese rice cooker.
