Going Deep

This is the "Mary Harrison's summer" edition of Going Deep. I know that most kids have started school already, but it's still technically summer for Mary as Autumn Quarter doesn't start until September 24. She's been on campus all summer working, but at the beginning of September she reduced her hours and/or finished her jobs when Sophomore College (more on that below) started.

In the summer Mary had three jobs. At the first she worked 20 hours per week at the Stanford Social Innovation Review as a Marketing Intern. SSIR (forgive the acronym but it's easier to type) is a quarterly magazine which focuses on not-for-profits. Her duties include things like updating their social media feed (Facebook and Twitter), as well as organizing materials for both live conferences and web conferences. There's a live conference scheduled to take place on campus this week so that's been a big part of her job lately. Mary worked at SSIR part-time during her freshman year, and she plans to stay on part-time during her sophomore year. When my mom and I were on campus last month we got to meet her colleagues at SSIR, which of course we enjoyed.

Also during the summer Mary worked 20 hours per week at the Center for Deliberative Democracy, an on-campus organization, where she got to assimilate research and write a paper. It was interesting work and she enjoyed her time there. She finished there last week.

A small but fun part of Mary's summer was working as Digital Editor for the Stanford Daily, Stanford's school newspaper. All summer long, the Twitter and Facebook feeds for the Daily were provided by none other than Mary Harrison. During the school year she will go back to being a regular reporter for the paper, as she was last school year.

And finally, this month Mary's taking a course at the Stanford Sophomore College, an optional interim program that is offered in September for sophomores only. The kids can take one class, which is condensed into one month. She's taking a Political Science class.

Through all of this Mary has been on the move. In June she moved from her regular dorm to an on-campus house, where she lived all summer. Last week she moved from that house to her Sophomore College housing. She's there til next week, when she moves to her permanent sophomore year housing. It's a lot of moving for one girl, so I think she can skip the weight room this month without feeling too much guilt!
